DRAM TABLE

D R A M   T A B L E
This little drinks table was commissioned by a wonderful watchmaker who I've known for a number of years. Her father is familiar with my work and has particularly remarked on my frogs, so when he had a little heart trouble we designed a 'dram table' with a frog to raise a smile during his enforced 'taking it easy' time. We added a second frog 'cos two frogs are better than one and I couldn't resist the school of tadpoles … then it turned out he has French connections which allowed me to add 'a votre sante' to the piece, perfect, it is after all what the Frogs say for 'cheers'.

A curious thing happened while I was carving the sitting frog, as I chiselled deeper into the block, with no warning a little pocket of bad wood began to appear … just in the left hand side of the frogs chest. It didn't run deep, in the end no bigger than a pea, I cleaned it out, repaired it and now it has a heart of oak … good as new. It just seemed like an odd coincidence, that's all.
