It's always an honour to be commissioned to make a special present, and a little daunting too … knowing that you must live up to an 'occasion', so I began this wedding gift a little anxiously … a dozen concept sketches; many meetings with the mother of the bride; and two trips to a little estate sawmill in Fife to find just the right piece of elm. In the end of course it was the board itself that led the design, the areas of swirling grain showed me where to place 'his and hers' otters and an awkward knot hole in need of a plug gave an opportunity for a surprise … a limited edition coin bearing the year of the great event.
