WILDLIFE CHAIRS

What you need most of all when you have a fourteen seater 'Ocean Table' that's elaborately illustrated with wildlife carvings … is a set of fourteen carved 'Wildlife Chairs' to match! So that's what we made. Fourteen is a mighty lot of chairs for one man though... [20 components each and 24 joints with no two the same] and I was grateful that my son's workshop team Method Studio took on the manufacture. They made the oak chairs to my design and supplied me with blank, curved seat backs ready to carve.

The wildlife designs were a thoroughly enjoyable collaboration with the client … they struggled to limit a 'long list' to thirty of their favourite animals, all observed and photographed by them over a lifetime of expeditions. The subjects all needed sketches, tests and options to 'fit' the restricted chair proportions and were then agonisingly culled to a 'short list' of fourteen. The backs were then all intricately carved [nowhere deeper than 10mm ~ for comfort], and then returned to Method for assembly … and finally to Stuart Henderson of www.CastleCottage.net for some excellent leather upholstery.

Now we just need another project for the animals that we had to leave out!
